Getting your NIE in Spain: the Nordic citizen's guide
The NIE is your foreigner identification number in Spain — without it you can't open a bank account, sign a lease or get paid. If you're from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway or Iceland, the EU/EEA route applies to you: apply from home through a Spanish consulate (form EX-15), or register in Spain with form EX-18 and get the green residence certificate. Here's the full process, the exact paperwork, and the appointment-system traps.
Every winter, the Spanish costas fill up with Nordic remote workers and semi-retirees — and every winter, the same bottleneck appears: the NIE. The good news for Scandinavians: whether you hold an EU passport (Sweden, Denmark, Finland) or an EEA one (Norway, Iceland), you follow the same simplified route as EU citizens. Here is how it actually works in 2026.
NIE, registration certificate, TIE — which one do you need?

Norway and Iceland are not in the EU, but the EEA agreement puts you under the same Spanish regime as EU citizens (Real Decreto 240/2007). You get the green certificate, not the TIE. If a clerk tells you otherwise, politely point to the EEA mention in the decree.
Route 1: getting your NIE from home (before you move)
Buying a holiday apartment in Alicante or opening a Spanish bank account before relocating? Apply through the Spanish consulate serving your country — Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo or Helsinki — listed on the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal.

Book a consulate appointment

Route 2: moving to Spain — the registration certificate (EX-18)
Staying more than 90 days? EU/EEA citizens must register in the Central Register of Foreigners. The procedure is described by the Policía Nacional and the Ministry of the Interior.

- Valid passport (or EU national ID)
Original plus a copy. Norwegians and Icelanders: passport required — your national ID is not an EU ID card.
- Proof of means: work, funds or studies
A Spanish work contract or autónomo registration, OR proof of sufficient funds plus private health coverage if you don't work. Nordic remote workers employed at home: your employment contract and payslips work, paired with an S1 form or private insurance.

Around €12 for the certificate. Generate the form online, pay at any Spanish bank, bring the stamped receipt.

Appointments are booked on the Public Administration's portal: pick your province, then the procedure "Policía – Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la U.E.".
In saturated provinces (Barcelona, Madrid, Málaga, Alicante), bots snatch slots and resell them for €30–80. Never pay: slots are released in waves, typically early morning and early in the week. Smaller provinces like Tarragona usually have slots within days — one more argument for the quieter stretches of the coast.
